Damodar Temple is located in the heart of Vasco Da Gama and it is the venue of the biggest festival in the town, Vasco Saptah. Hindu religious life revolves around this festival.

Legend has it that when people began dying during the 1896 epidemic that broke out in the city. The locals turned to Lord Damodar, an avatar of Lord Shiva for help. A sacred coconut was brought to the famous Damodar Temple at Zambaulim, a divine symbol to be worshipped. During the festival, the coconut from the previous year is taken out and a troupe of dancers follows it during its visit to Vasco’s prominent citizens with spectators throwing buckets of water at the dancers. Upon return to the temple, there is an immersion ceremony and devotional songs are sun continuously for 24 hours after which the new coconut is anointed. Stalls are put up by the vendors all along the streets selling everything from toys to clothes.

The best time to visit the temple is during the month of August when the week-long celebrations take place. The celebrations are associated with Lord Shiva and Nagpanchami. Damodar Temple of Vasco can be visited during during timings 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM.
