'Laitlum' literally means the end of the hill which it surely is. Visitors will find 300 odd huts, almost on the cliff of the hill and cultivating little available land on the slopes of the mountain. They actually live on the edge. The place has a 3000 step long staircase and a rustic ropeway. The serene beauty of the canyons is bound to an amazing experience for visitors. Hiking through the clouds that blanket the pristine location is an experience one will cherish for a lifetime.
Laitlum Canyons is a hidden jew near Shillong. It is not uncommon to not find even a single tourist at the destination. Thus, it is as far away as possible from all the hustles and bustles of the city life. The place is ideal for trekking and is sure to attract adventurous travellers. There aren't many facilities available owing to its lack of mainstream popularity. However, a lone shop in the valley offers snacks and the much needed hot 'Chai'. The Laitlum Canyons offer a panoramic view of the silent and peaceful valley underneath and the patches of green meadows. The best time to visit Laitlum Canyons would be in summer. As winters tend to get very cold and in the monsoons, the rains make the terrain risky.
The 3000 steps staircase is flanked by bamboo plantations and colourful orchids. Also, the Laitlum stream, with a vintage wooden bridge across it is another attraction. When in Shillong, one cannot afford to miss this offbeat destination. There is no entry fee or timings for Laitlum Canyons, but it is advised to go before 5:00 PM.
