Sri Gokilambal Thirukameshwara Temple officially Arulmigu Kokilambigai Vudanurai Thirukameswarar Thirukovil, popularly known as the Villianur Temple, is a historic Hindu temple situated at a distance of around 8 kms from Pondicherry city center.
The Villianur temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in form of the Shiva Linga, with ornate sculptures and a colorful exterior. Sri Gokilambal Thirukameshwara Temple complex was originally constructed centuries ago by the Cholas. It follows a typical Dravidian architectural style with a tall and inticrately craved gopuram (sanctum sanctotum). One of the special features of the temple is the fact that the rays of Sun fall on the presiding deity on 9, 11 and 19 in the month of Panguni covering the Gregorian calendar March-April.
The most popular festival celebrated at the Gokilambal Thirukameshwara Temple is the Brahmotsavam, which is observed for ten days continuously. It would be the best time to visit the temple. In addition, the annual Temple Car Festival which is held between the months of May and June involves the pulling of a 15 metre tall chariot through the streets by a large crowd of devotees.
Visitors are recommended to visit the Villianur temple during the months of May and June. Villianur temple can be visited during timings 6. 00 AM - 12. 00 Noon and 4. 00 PM - 9. 00 PM.
