Yercaud is a hill station near Salem , Tamil Nadu, in the Servarayan range (anglicized as Shevaroys) of hills in the Eastern Ghats located around 370 km from Chennai. It is at an altitude of 1,500 metres (4,920 feet) from mean sea level. The town gets its name from the lake located at its center - in Tamil "Yeri" means "lake" and "Kaadu" means "forest".

The highest point in Yercaud is the Servarayan temple, which is situated at a height of 5326 feet and the stone-age implements have been found near it. Hence the Yercaud hill area is called Shevaroy Hills. It is also explained as Seven Forest. Yercaud is known for coffee plantations and orange groves. It also has an orchidarium run by the Botanical Survey of India. There are 3000 trees and 1800 shrubs grown in Orchidarium. Yercaud is rich in endemic and charismatic species of wildlife.

A beautiful lake with boating facilities adorns the centre. The Yercaud boat house provides an ample opportunity to enjoy the scenic beauty of the hilly terrain through boat riding which one shouldn't miss when visiting Yercaud. The boat riding is available for minimal costs. The climate of Yercaud is pleasant moderate humid subtropical . The coffee bushes blossom in April and offer a spectacular view.

Trek up a nearby hill. There are also plenty of scenic holiday cottages that are built on the hill slopes. The view from the top of the falls into the Valley is heart stopping. The trek to the bottom of the falls is only for hardcore trekkers as it takes about one hour from the lake to reach the bottom of the falls which is heavily wooded. One can go to the Pyramid Point on the Eastern side of the Yercaud hills to look and enjoy the magnificent thrilling sights. And to the southern most view point of Yercaud by taking the Tipperary Road. From there one can see the Elephant Tooth Rocks which are reported to be the remanents of a meteorite which fell to earth. 

Scenically, Yercaud is as enchanting and picturesque as the hill stations on the Eastern Ghats and trekking here can be one of the most pleasurable experiences. One can also do an adventurous dirt biking in a place close to Grange Resorts 4 kms from the lake. As a popular tourist destination, Yercaud is also called as Jewel of the South. An ideal place to visit throughout the year.
