Madku Dweep is a small island situated in the Shivnath river which is blessed by Mother Nature with abundantly rich flora and some magnificent views. It is one of the major tourist destinations in the state. It is 40 kms away from the city center of Bilaspur.

There are some interesting legends associated with this beautiful island. One of such is that this island got its name from the frog-shaped geography of the place while observed from the air. The island exactly looks like a frog from the air not only in the shape but also in the color and arrangement. There is also a legend mentioning a sage, Mundaka Rishi who wrote the Mundaka Upanishads from here. There is also a structure of this sage in the island. It is believed that this island got its name from this particularly important former inhabitant. However, this is one of the most beautiful islands in the state.

Madku Dweep is an archeological site since there are ancient ruins of some temples in this place. According to the archeologists that excavated the site, Madku Dweep has the ruins of 19 temples. This all temples were dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that the temples were destructed due to a flood that submerged the whole island in past. During excavations of the place, idols of Krishna, Uma, Ganesha etc. were found. The island is well connected with the highways now via two bridges. Rich and fertile soil, a magnificent waterfall, a spiritually enlightening shrine etc. are some of the numerous attractions of the island.
