Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary is national wildlife reserve well known in the state of Chhattisgarh with its different flora and fauna it holds from years. Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Mungeli Distirct of Chhattisgarh State and it is about 78 kms from the main city Bilaspur of Chhattisgarh.
Achanakamar Wildlife Sanctuary has been established in 1975 after the provisions announced under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. Later, it even declared as a Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger in 2009. It is also a part of the Achanakamar-Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve. Since it is embracing on the foothills of the giagnatic Maikal Rnage, it is filled with the dense forests which have been nourished since centuries by the flow of the water from the tirbutaries of River Narmada, Sone and Johilla rivers. As already mentioned about the Biosphere reserve i. e. Achanakmar-Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve which consists a special place in India because of the connection of a Biosphere Reserve between two main States i. e, Madhya Pradesh and Chattishgarh because Amarakantak is located in Madhya Pradesh.
Achanakamar Wildlife Sanctuary is mainly based in hilly terrains with the altitudes ranging from 20-1,000 meters. Amongst many animal spotting areas, some noted spots are the watering holes of Sihawal Sagar, Pandavani Talab, Tangli-Pathar, Nagbohara, Lakshman Dogri and Khuria Jalashay. Almost 557 square kilometers of area covered with a thick vegetation, these watering holes and the animal spotting hubs altogether makes the wildlife lovers and enthusiasts to forget each hustle bustle world aside.
As the summer is best time to have the view of all the different animals nestled here like Bengal Tiger, leopards, Wild bison, striped hyena, sloth bear, dhole and even sambar deer. The watchtowers also make a good vantage point for all the visitors. There is an availability of night stays provided by the Forest Department, if possible try to spend a night at one of these forest rest houses and enjoy the night-sky view from this thick forested sanctuary. Chhattisgarh Tourism Board also runs a Resort called Sonbhadra Tourist Rest ar Amadob which 45 kilometers far from the main city Bilaspur and the charges for staying is quiet reasonable.
Achanakamar Wildlife Sanctuary can be visited during timings 6:00 AM - 5:30 PM. It's better to carry food, enough drinking water, binoculars for a better view of animals and cool sun-glasses to chill under the sun. Best season to visit this sanctuary is in the summer months i. e. , March to July as in monsoons this area becomes damp and stinky with full flow of rain cum river water.
