Raj Rajeshwari Temple, also known as Rajeshwar Nagari, is one of the oldest temple in Akola and is located inside the famous Akola Fort, also called as Asadgad. The Shiva Temple was built by the Chola Empire King Raj Rajeshwar.
The Linga which is worshipped here has a little crack, which has a story dating back to the reign of King Akola Singh. Along with Lord Shiva, there are two other temples – one of Lord Hanuman and the other belonging to Lord Datta. People from all over India come to visit this auspicious temple on Monday which is considered to be the day of Lord Shiva. The premises are neat and clean.
Everyday, aarti of Lord Shiva is performed at 8:30 PM which must not be missed. Palkhis on the eve of Shivaratri are also taken out with the idol of Lord Shiva decorated and placed in a rath and people chanting the songs, seeking blessing from Lord. Other destinations worth visiting are Shri Balaji Mandir, Bethel Alliance Church, Mahakali Mandir, Balapur Fort and Narnala Fort.
Many taxis and autos are available from the Akola Airport as well as railway station upto the Akola Fort. The best time to visit is in early morning during sunrise to witness the beauty of nature. The entry is free. Cameras and video recorders are also allowed inside the temple. The temple can be visited during timings 10:30 AM - 9:00 PM.
